Assess the existing garage

We evaluate the existing garage structure, including the walls, ceiling, doors, and windows in order to identify any areas that may allow sound leakage or vibrations. Here are just a few things we look at and recommend as part of an installation:

  • Insulate the walls
    Soundproof insulation materials in the garage walls enhances soundproofing and reduces sound transmission.
  • Focus on doors and windows
    Upgrading the garage door with a solid-core door or add mass-loaded vinyl barriers reduces sound penetration. Weatherstripping around the garage door and windows creates a tight seal and prevents air and sound leakage.
  • Enhance the ceiling
    Acoustic panels and other soundproofing materials on the garage ceiling absorb sound reflections and minimise vibrations. Resilient channels or sound clips to decouple the ceiling further reduces sound transmission.
  • Soundproof the floor
    Using acoustic underlay or carpet padding dampens impact noise from footsteps and equipment vibrations. Installing carpet or thick rugs can also help to minimise sound reflections within the space.
  • Treat the windows
    If the garage has windows, we can add soundproof glazing and window inserts to improve sound insulation. Additionally, covering windows with heavy curtains or soundproof blinds further reduces sound penetration.

I requested that City Insulation take on several projects at my apartment in Manchester, including reinsulating most of the walls and adding secondary glazing for acoustic/thermal insulative properties to all the windows, as my apartment is centrally located in an area with significant noise disruptions during peak times, city events, and so on. The company was thoroughly professional throughout, including working to fit things matching the original fixtures and fittings of the property with the appropriate RAL colours and trims, and the insulation work additionally involved preparing a new... recess/infill section and adding an extra cupboard space, as well as managing electrical changes and other complexities. We'd had problems with noise from our neighbours – loud TV, loud phone conversations – which had become so intrusive we were considering moving. But we love our house, so instead, we decided to get "proper" sound proofing done by City Insulation, and we're really glad we did. Intrusive noise has been pretty much entirely eliminated and we feel like our home is our own once more. Jack and Nick did the work and were a pleasure to have in the house.
